History of APOSS

Aboriginal Prisoners and Offenders Support Services was established in 1994 as a response to the recommendations made by the 'Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody Report' released in the late 1980's.

The recommendation included the recognition that in the 'implementation of any policy or program which will particularly affect Aboriginal people, the delivery of the program should, as a matter of preference, be made by Aboriginal organisations as are appropriate to deliver services pursuant to the policy of program' (Recommendation 192)
